I’m Roland Kriston, a Reality Capture & Geospatial Specialist working across point cloud processing, laser scanning, spatial data and the wider reality capture workflow.
My experience spans the process from field acquisition and registration through processing, QA/QC and the preparation of project-ready spatial data.
This end-to-end understanding allows me to contribute where a project actually needs expertise from a clearly defined technical task to broader workflow support and collaboration within an existing team.
The technology matters. Understanding what the data needs to achieve matters more.
Experience Across the Reality Capture Workflow
Reality capture is not a single operation. Capture, processing, validation and delivery are connected parts of the same workflow, and decisions made at one stage can directly affect everything that follows.
My experience includes work across:
Field acquisition
Terrestrial laser scanning, mobile mapping and other reality capture workflows, including capture planning and field methodology.
Registration and georeferencing
Bringing captured datasets into a consistent spatial framework and preparing them for subsequent processing and use.
Point cloud processing
Cleaning, optimisation, classification and preparation of point cloud datasets according to project requirements.
Quality and validation
QA/QC, data assessment, troubleshooting and verification throughout the reality capture workflow.
Spatial data preparation
Preparing processed datasets and project-ready spatial information for downstream use and delivery.
Workflow and project support
Technical decision-making, workflow development and specialist involvement where additional experience or capacity is required.
The individual technologies and software may change. The underlying objective does not:
build a workflow that produces the data the project actually needs.



Different Environments. Different Challenges.
Reality capture workflows have to respond to the environment in which the data is collected and the purpose for which it will be used.
My experience spans different project environments and requirements, including:
built environments and architectural documentation
engineering and dimensional verification
infrastructure and larger spatial environments
terrestrial laser scanning
mobile mapping
geospatial and survey-related datasets
complex point cloud processing
registration and georeferencing
QA/QC and data validation
project-specific spatial data preparation
The appropriate approach depends on the site, required accuracy, available source data, intended deliverables and the decisions the resulting information needs to support.
That is why I approach reality capture as a project-specific workflow rather than a predefined technology stack.
Beyond the Technology
Scanners, sensors and software are important, but they are only parts of a reality capture project.
The more important questions usually come earlier:
What needs to be captured?
What level of information and accuracy is required?
How will the data be processed and validated?
What does the final dataset need to support?
Understanding those dependencies makes it possible to look beyond an isolated capture or processing task and consider the dataset in the context of the project it belongs to.
My experience across the full workflow helps connect field acquisition, processing, QA/QC and final data preparation rather than treating them as unrelated operations.
The objective is not simply to collect or process data. It is to make the data work for the project.
How I Work
I work independently and in collaboration with surveying companies, reality capture teams, geospatial specialists, engineering organisations and other project partners.
Much of my work can be carried out remotely, particularly point cloud processing, registration, georeferencing, QA/QC, workflow review and technical support. This makes it possible to contribute to projects internationally without requiring permanent on-site involvement.
Where field involvement is required, I can join projects on site using client, project or rented equipment appropriate to the assignment.
I do not operate a fixed proprietary equipment fleet. This allows the capture method and technology to be selected according to the actual project requirement rather than being determined by equipment ownership.
Depending on the project, my involvement can range from a clearly defined technical task to ongoing specialist collaboration within a larger team.
The role should fit the project — not the other way around.
